A Journey in Photographs - IV

Being in a somewhat sour mood, mostly due to the recent occurrences in the city, I finally decided to vent it where I have always done - here. And since my brain is too tired to create anything decent, I finally decided to do the next sequel of this series.

Remember, most of these pictures were taken using my faithful Nokia E63, so please do not complain about the picture quality.

Do bear with me through this installment. An apology (in advance) to the non-Bengali readers, since some of the exhibits are in Bangla. I will translate and/or transliterate whenever I can, though.

Exhibit 1: So I guess whatever they had taught us was wrong. Kids can have babies.

Exhibit 2: This is an old joke made by the legendary Dadathakur, but I guess I should do a replug - given that I have got a chance to capture it.
Transliteration: Charitraheen Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay.

Exhibit 3: If you do not want to get herpes, syphilis, gonorrhoea, or something similar, that is.

Exhibit 4: Agencies typically service cars, but servicing drivers is a first for me. If you're interested, you can always call and learn what this is all about.

Exhibit 5: Sorry about the picture quality. It says Exterior Interior Ltd. You can interpret it the way you want to.

Exhibit 6: No, this is not a Rabindrasangeet. Absolutely not.

Exhibit 7: I wonder what this clock is used to measure. I have an intelligent guess, though.

Exhibit 8: No comments. The movie is Peechha Karro, a Diptakirti recommendation.

Exhibit 9: Courtesy Tamal. Just an example how things can go wrong if you don't repair things in time. And no, I'm not going to translate this.

Exhibit 10: As opposed to the heavier version. Or the darker version.
Transliteration: The light Swami Vivekananda.

Exhibit 11: No, 6pcs (or 6 pieces) does not mean kima meat. It never did.

Exhibit 12: Either this is where Sita entered the underworld for the last time, or, well... you interpret for yourself. Do note the spelling of 'entrance', though.

Exhibit 13: This is why they call Kolkata a male-chauvinist city.
Transliteration: Bou.
Translation: Wife.

Exhibit 14: You know now who polishes our city clean, don't you?

Exhibit 15: A very, very small lap - will accommodate a smartphone at most; certainly won't accommodate a laptop. I wonder why this is the name of a nursing-home.

  1. Loved it. I have seen a couple of them myself. Shagun sarees and born baby set....am still laughing! BTW did my Grammar Nazi friend notice that 6 pieces MEAN and not Means?
FYI: Microlap (Deshopriya Park, near Dakshini) toh? It is a nursing home specialised in micro-surgeries and laproscopy. Hence the name :/ (khub bhalo nursing home, kono thatta shunbo na)

    1. 1. 6pcs is one word. Had it been '6 pieces' he would definitely have written 'mean'.
      2. Microlap may be an excellent nursing home, but that doesn't take away the aura of its name.

  2. So six or more pieces of anything officially makes it kima?
    Is exhibit 13 a dumpster?
    It's rabindra sangeet remix ?
    mm..biological clock?
    A polished mall,well moped perhaps?

    1. 1. I think so, according to them. I'm sure they didn't intend to write 'mince'.
      2. It's simply NOT a Rabindrasangeet. It was written by Dwijendralal Roy.
      3. A biological clock makes sense.
      4. It says METRO polish. It keeps the CITY clean.

  3. Shagun sarees was fabulous.

And I'm sure the restaurant owner is not one to "mince" words :).

As for Basundhara - I am "entranced"!

      2. Basundhara is near Somnath's residence IIRC.

  8. There's logic behind everything,however weird.
    Here's my loose change:
    Roy rocks.Rabindra sells.
i wonder if Gora Tagore would be classified as racist?
It is not the question of Bou being 'used' well,it is more about the word that doubles up as a modern scarecrow.
And, i've seen bidis named Vivekananda.
Like Bourbon,'born' is the name of the baby set.
I don't know about saris, but smut sells, it's not hurting their business...Quick now how do i explain this goofy grin to my colleagues?

    1. >> Roy rocks.Rabindra sells.
      Erm, the context?
      >> i wonder if Gora Tagore would be classified as racist?
Once again, the context? And who is Gora Tagore anyway?
      >> It is not the question of Bou being 'used' well,it is more about the word that doubles up as a modern scarecrow.
      I did not get you.
Like Bourbon,'born' is the name of the baby set.
      >> No. Kids-born baby set doesn't make any sense. And it was not a brand name here.
I don't know about saris, but smut sells, it's not hurting their business...Quick now how do i explain this goofy grin to my colleagues?
      >> Ask any Bengali. :)

    2. Did not get 3,5,10 and 14.
Bou is used to scare away scavengers or like didi is funded by a bou.
It also means i'm scared of my wife ;)
      Dwijendralal Roy sings,but Kobiguru sells.
Charitraheen Chattopadhyay is worse than Gora tagore. The latter is racist.

    3. 3 is Check & Fill.
5 is Exterior Interior Ltd, I've got no idea what that means.
10 is The Light Swami Vivekananda, a movie
      14 is Metro Polish Mall

    4. That would be an interior designing institute.

      Delete
    5. Well, when you start designing the interior of a house, you wouldn't want the exterior to be left out. So, 'Exterior' designing would include landscaping, elevation designing of the house, etc.

And yes, I happen to be a student of Exterior Interior P Ltd. X(

    6. Nice knowing you. An innovative name for an institute, I must say.

    2. Thanks, but it'll defeat the purpose of this post if you had to tediously explain each exhibit like a funny joke I could not get. Consign it to the bong-friendly category though for easy classification.

  11. I made a comment on your previous entry that you would enjoy walking trails. This is because you like watching cricket, like taking the time to walk around but notice small things. That makes me think you will like walking trails.

    Anyway about this post:
    1. Born baby ? as opposed to unborn babies? Or is this inspired by baby corn from a previous edition?
    3. You should provide a transliteration ... can't make out what is written.
    5. Did you not know that all songs that are 'slow' are classified as Rabindra Sangeet? But, seriously, one can only wonder how all other literary giants in Bengal feel when this happens: Is it terrible that even their best works are thought of as the works of man they clashed with during your lifetime? Or is it to be regarded as a great accolade?
    6. Could not make out what the illustrations were looking like.
    7. Took a moment to figure out what the deal was. It is even harder to figure out if the number of letters stayed the same.
    9. Please advise them to get rid of one or two more letters if repairs are too costly to get a letter back.
    10. For the some of the others, I can try to understand what they wanted to say. Here I am lost ..., as I am with 14. is 13 the acronymn of some company? Bharat/Bengal - - ?
    11. Even if he wanted to say mince/minced what is minced kima ?
    15. Does not matter for a hospital name, but whoever named it should probably not be allowed to name any humans.

    1. 1. Born baby, or kids-born baby - your choice.
      3. Isn't 'Check & Fill' good enough?
      5. Do you mean 6?
      6. What are you talking about?
      7. Are you confusing the numbers? The numbers are below the pictures.
      9. I wish I could talk to them.
      10. It's the name of a movie. I kid you not.
      11. Powdered meat, I suppose.

    1. It's a decent book, but not as intriguing as I had expected. Just my two cents, though.

    1. No, but I've read 'Eats, Shoots, and Leaves'. Will that do?

  15. 'Eats, shites and leaves' is a funny take on english, but it's pricey like 'plato & platipus...'.Would you recommend buying that?
Are there any decent libraries in Calcutta?
Do you prefer to read on kindle?
How much money should one spend on books every month?
Do you like to own books for its sentimental worth or only reading them interests you?
Do you have a well stocked library?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's 'shoots', for the second time. The Indian edition of ES&L isn't expensive at all.

If you ask me, Plato and a Platypus (not platipus) isn't worth the exorbitant price.

      As for the other questions,
      - Yes, the National Library.
      - I do not own a kindle.
      - It varies.
      - Usually the latter, though there are a few from the former group as well.
      - Not as well-stocked as I would've liked it to be.

  16. Thanks :)

It's 'eats,Shites and leaves' not 'shoots'.This is a different book, not same as 'eats, shoots and leaves'.
